General Information

1. Greetings from Chairman and Director General of EHRF

(Director-general)
Takehiko Sugiyama

More than half a century has passed since the Express Highway Research Foundation of Japan (EHRF) has established in December 1957. Since then, Japan has made aggressive efforts to improve the expressway network. During this time, Japan has remarkable development. Approximately 10,548km of expressway networks were constructed by the end of May 2013. These challenges are part of the 14,000km total national highway network plan. Japan has also developed the Metropolitan, Hanshin and other urban expressways around cities and their peripheral areas. At the end of May 2013, the length of these urban expressways reached 811km.

In recent years, people have been demanding not only quantity but also quality for road networks. The demands for expressways have been diversified. Technologies such as ETC and smart IC system have been introduced. Upgrading road scenery and protecting the environment around the expressways are also required. As globalization continues, Japan’s high-standard technology is in strong demand in many parts of the world.

The EHRF has continued to engage in studies and surveys on road transportation economics, road engineering, traffic engineering, and other subjects related to expressways and automobiles, and continuously gathered information on advanced studies and road traffic technology from overseas road institutions as well as studying road environments and road scenery.

The EHRF will continue to expressway development in Japan. The foundation highly appreciates your continuing support and cooperation.
